USA - Bronze Star Medal and Bar with “V” Device

United States, c.1945-65 - Bronze Star Medal and Bar with “V” device. Instituted February 4, 1944, the Bronze Star was awarded for bravery, acts of merit, or meritorious service. On December 22, 1945, the “V” device was awarded for acts of valor and heroism, rather than meritorious service. It is constructed out of a die struck bronze base that has been bronze washed. The obverse features a small star in front of a larger embossed star. The reverse reads: “Heroic or Meritorious Achievement” in a circle on the star background. To the top is an integral rectangular loop and rectangular ring which holds a red, white and blue ribbon. There is a “V” device attached with two round wire prongs. The reverse is missing its pin assembly. It measures 1 3/8 inches wide and tall. Accompanying the medal is the bar
