Ersatz Stag Grip - Short Dress Bayonet by Hörster
Extra-Seitengewehr 98K mit Seitengewehrtasche by E. & F. Hörster of Solingen. A nice extra cost feature with stag grips. The blade is a drop forged, single edged, fullered, spear point, plated, 195mm long example. The stamped “E. u. F. Hörster of Solingen” maker mark remains. The bade rates Exc. There are some rough areas to the cutting edge, the plating remains 60% intact and there is age grey throughout. The black buffer pad remains intact. The scabbard is sheet metal and black enamel painted. It shows heavy oxidization spotting throughout. It continues to retain the majority of its paint and remains dent free. The original obverse throat retaining screw remains intact. The throat is numbered: “315”. The scabbard fits perfectly up against the hilt. The hilt is zinc-alloy based and nickel-silver plated. It retains 80% of its plating. The fully functioning steel mortise button remains working well. The desirable multi-toned ersatz stag grips plates are well fit and secured with two solid nickel-silver rivets. Ersatz is a term used meaning that a substitute material was used for the grip plates replacing the stag horn with in this case carved wood. They are in near perfect condition with no cracks or chips anywhere. This piece also comes with a crazed black leather frog. Purchased from the son of the veteran.
