United States, WWII and Korean War, pre-1948/1950 - Marine Corps Officer’s Mameluke Sword distributed by NS Meyer Inc. Named to MAJ Delmar L. Edwards who fought in World War II and Korea. Edwards was born on December 17, 1923 and died May 3 1989. He was from Salt Lake City, Utah where he is buried. The slightly curved, single edged, multi-fullered, etched, 32-inch-long blade on this one is gorgeous. The earlier style, crisp acid etched panels provide a beautiful motif. They clearly feature a bannered “United States Marines”, the US flag, Marine Corp shields and floral patterns to either side. The reverse is acid etched to a “Delmar L. Edwards”. The reverse features the distributor/maker mark which reads: “No 202 Trade Defender Mark NS Meyer Inc”. The obverse features a five-pointed star and has a separately inserted brass disk/slug that reads “Proved”. The brown felt buffer pad remains intact. The scabbard is made of polished steel sheet metal with brass fittings, which include; a floral decorative drag (secured with two screws), two laurel leaf and berry bands (each held by two screws) and rings and a separate throat (secured with two side screws). It shows minor scratches yet remains dent free and has a great mirror like finish. The gilded brass hilt features a cruciform guard with pointed langets and quillions that end at a robust static acorn each. The thinner P-shaped grip features orange trylon plates that are secured with two star capped through rivets. the obverse plate has a week chip. There is a hole to the pommel top which has a black leather portepee tied through it and the one quillion. A nice early named example.
