Grand Duchy of Hesse, Type III - Allgemeines Ehrenzeichen “Für Tapferkeit” (c. 1894-1918). Instituted September 25, 1842, this type three Geneal Honor Decoration was awarded for bravery. It is constructed out of a die stamped silver base. The round shaped obverse features the left facing bust of Ernst Ludwig surrounded by: “Ernst Ludwig Grossherzog von Hessen”. The reverse reads: “Für Tapferkeit”, surrounded by a laurel leaf and berry (left) and oak leaf and acorn (right) wreath, that is tied together at the bottom with a ribbon. To the top is a soldered-on loop and ring which holds 3 ½ inches of the type III light blue and red rayon ribbon. The award measures 1 5/16 inches in diameter.
