A Flugzeugführerabzeichen by F. W. Assmann & Söhne of Lüdenscheid (Type 9b – 3rd Pattern). Instituted March 14, 1935, the Luftwaffe Pilot Badge was awarded to all pilots upon successfully completing flight training. It is constructed out of two pieces of die struck zinc that have been black chemically burnished and silver washed. The obverse features a blackened centrally placed swooping Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. Behind the eagle attached at the wings is a half laurel leaf and berry, half oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse is correctly maker marked “A” (F. W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid), it also shows two flattened rivets, a soldered-on block hinge, a soldered-on round plate flatwire catch and a round wire pin. All of the components continue to work well. The lower portion of the eagle is slightly pushed in most likely in the factory as there is no obvious wiggle. It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/8 inches tall. A very desirable maker.
