M36 Type II / B1 - Schutzstaffel Kettendolch für Offiziere. Introduced August 25, 1936, the Model 1936 - SS Service Dagger was approved by H. Himmler for wear by all officers having held rank as of November 9, 1935, or those two has three or more years of service as of January 30, 1936. The blade on this one looks great. The acid etched “Meine Ehre heißt Treue” motto is beautifully executed. The crossgrain is easily visible all the way from the hilt to tip. The tip and fit are both perfect. There is no maker mark and this is exactly how these were issued. The blade rates Exc++. It has been cleaned, likely an attempt are removing the remaining spotting and age grey. The sheet metal based black painted scabbard body on this one looks excellent. It shows the odd paint hit yet continues to hold 98%+ paint coverage. The solid nickel-silver scabbard fittings look excellent. The lower fitting has an indent to one of the tightened screws and the ball has a bump to it. All five screws remain intact. The chain is a very desirable being the Type B1 / early Type II variation with the solid nickel-silver base metal links that hold beautiful black burnished backgrounds. The chain links have gorgeous silvered patina and show wonderful detail to the skulls and SS runes. The correct first upper link reverse is clearly “SS” proof marked. The wootans-knot clip looks great and continues to work well. The scabbard to crossguard fit is perfect. The nickel-silver based crossguards are in wonderful shape. They match the scabbard fittings and chain perfectly. The black hardwood grip on this one looks excellent. Only the slightest pressure marks and wee flake chips to the reverse top. The grip to crossguard fits are perfect. The solid nickel-silver eagle is beautifully detailed. The SS roundel retains 98%+ of its enamel and also has a perfect fit. A very desirable example.
