A 1939 Das Verdienstkreuz des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler 2. Stufe mit Schwerter by 21 - Gebr. Godet & Co. of Berlin. Instituted May 1, 1937, (reorganized April 29, 1939, and again on December 27, 1943), the Order of Merit of the German Eagle was awarded to foreign nationals who had made a meritorious contribution to the German Reich on the recommendation of the Reich Minister for Foreign Affairs. It is constructed out of a multi-piece die struck 900 silver content base that has been gold fire and silver gilded and contains white enamel work all behind a protective lacquer coating. The obverse features two centrally placed crossed broadswords on top of a white Maltese style cross that has four national eagles (Godet Type 2) between each arm. The fullback gilded reverse correctly features a central rivet, a soldered-on block hinge with moon shaped stopper, soldered-on c-shaped catch and coke bottle pin that is marked “900 21” (silver content designation | Gebr. Godet & Co., Berlin). All of the components continue to work well. It measures 1 15/16 inches wide and tall. Beautiful enamel work, gilding and detail. An elegant award.
