“Nationaler Feiertag des Deutschen Volkes 1937” Plaque

Plakette Nationaler Feiertag des Deutschen Volkes 1. Mai 1937 in Silber by Deschler & Sohn of München. Introduced in 1933, the NSDAP declared May 1st the “Day of National Work” as an official state holiday to celebrate laborers and the working classes. It is constructed out of a die struck nickel-silver base that has been silver washed and burnished. The round shaped obverse depicts; a child holding a three-piece oak leaf cluster in his left hand while waving with his right, he is above a national eagle (with outstretched wings clutching a wreathed swastika in its talons) which is flanked by “1 Mai” (left) and “1937” (right) along with the artist’s signature “RK” (R. Klein). The reverse reads: “Nationaler Feiertag des Deutschen Volkes 1937” along with a small maker mark “Deschler München” to the rim. It measures 2 3/8 inches in diameter. I have observed these in bronze (which was over $450!) and silver. They are extremely rare.
