A Luftschutz Ehrenzeichen 1. Stufe. Instituted January 30, 1938, the 1st class Luftschutz medal was awarded to those who gave extraordinary bravery and service in protecting the German civilian population. While more were made, only a total of 150 awards were presented. It is constructed out of a die struck zinc base that has been gold gilded. The obverse features a pebbled Canterbury style cross that has a centrally placed mobile swastika that is surrounded by “Für Verdienste im Luftschutz” (For Meritorious Service in Air Defense). The reverse features that same cross with “1938” (19 - left arm, 38 - right arm). To the top of the cross is an integral rectangular loop, flat connector and round ring. Attached to the ring is 4 ½ inches of blue, white, red and black rayon ribbon. The gold wash has been completely absorbed by the zinc. The award measures 1 ½ inches wide and tall. An extremely rare award.
