Spanish Cross for Next of Kin - post war

A Ehrenkreuz für Hinterbliebene Deutscher Spanienkämpfer (Spanienkreuz für Hinterbliebene). Intituted April 14, 1939, the Spanish Cross for Next of Kin (widow, oldest son or daughter, father, mother, brother, sister) was awarded to the next relatives of German Spain fighters who had died in captivity, were fatally injured or died as a result of their wounds. A total of 315 awards were presented.

It is constructed out of a multi-piece die struck bronze base that has been bronze washed soldered together and lacquered. The obverse features a pebbled Maltese style cross with four Luftwaffe eagles (with full swastikas) to each corner, that has an encircled (separately soldered-on) mobile swastika to the center. The reverse features a plain full back. To the top is a soldered-on loop and ring which holds the appropriate black, white, red and yellow rayon ribbon. It measures 1 ½ inches wide and tall. An extremely rare piece, third I’ve owned in my lifetime.
