Schiessbecher “Shooting Cup” Große Gewehr-Panzergranate Ammunition Crate 1943. The Gewehr-Sprenggranate was a high-explosive rifle grenade that was developed by Germany and used by the Wehrmacht during World War II. This crate held 20 rounds. It is made out of lacquered wood that is held together with box joints (four edges) and screws. The back has two steel blackened hinges, one of the 12 screws is missing a nut. To the very front/top is a steel blackened latch clasp and one brass clasp (there are holes where another may have been). The left side is stamped: “1943” (bottom left), “B” (encircled, above the date) and is Waffen amp stamped with a national eagle above “WaA251” (bottom left). It also reads, in black paint: “gr.G.Pzgr.” (Große Gewehr-Panzergranate) to the top. The front sticker and inside lid sticker were taken off, most likely during the period by the vet. There are some cracks, bumps and chips throughout. It measures 18 inches wide by 7 5/8 inches tall by 9 ½ inches deep. The top, reverse and bottom, are hand written: “To – Mr. Walter Ferry 431 Hampden RD Upper Darby DE Co. Penna USA”. This crate was a part of a veteran grouping we purchased from the family. Mr. Walter Ferry (Private First Class) joined the US Army on October 24, 1939 and was discharged on July 19, 1945, as a member of Company C, 3185th Signal Service Battalion.
