Japan, Early-Edo Period (1615-1624 AD) - Noshi No Zu Daishō Tsuba by the Chôshû School - Nakai family. The Nakai school was founded at Hagi by Nakai Nobutsune (1st generation). These sword guards (tsuba 鐔) are made of forged iron (tetsu 鉄) ground. Both dai and sho have a nikubori ji-sukash with a Noshi design featuring long strips of bundled dried sea-ear. The Dai (large): has a polished surface (migaki-ji), four lobed shape (mokkō-gata) and an angular rim (dote-mimi). There are two hitsu-ana holes. There are copper fillings (suaka sekigane) to top and bottom of tang hole (nakago-ana). Size: 87.02mm x 86.92mm, 4.25mm at rim, 117g. The Sho (small): has a polished surface (migaki-ji), has a slightly vertically elongated round shape (nagamaru-gata) and an angular rim (dote-mimi). There are two hitsu-ana holes. There is a copper filling (suaka sekigane) to top of tang hole (nakago-ana). Size: 78.83mm x 80.16mm, 4.55mm at rim, 114g. This daisho tsuba is for use on a katana and wakizashi. Rich black patina. Deluxe kiri box (crack to top lid) and pillows included.
