Japan, Mid-Edo Period (1625-1694 AD) – Daishō Tsuba by Yagyû Ren´ya Toshikane (柳生連也厳包). These sword guards (tsuba 鐔) are made of forged iron (tetsu 鉄). The Dai (large): has a three-dimensional carving (marubori-sukashi) with a polished surface (migaki-ji), round shape (mara-gata) and a rounded rim (maru-mimi). There are two hitsu-ana holes. There is copper filling (Suaka Sekigane) to back of tang hole (nakago-ana). Size: 75.14mm x 77.36mm, 5.39mm at rim, 134g. The Sho (small): has a three-dimensional carving (marubori-sukashi) with polished surface (migaki-ji), round shape (mara-gata) and a rounded rim (maru-mimi). There are two hitsu-ana holes, both the kogai and kozuka are plugged. There is copper filling (Suaka Sekigane) to the top of tang hole (nakago-ana). Size: 73.21mm x 72.91mm, 5.72mm at rim, 132g. This daisho tsuba is likely for use on a katana and wakizashi. The lid of the kiri box has a split and has been repaired. Stock Nr. #22.
