Bone Grip, Distributor Marked - Fein ciselierter Hirschfänger für Forstbeamte by Carl Eickhorn of Solingen. The 11-inch long, triple etched blade on this one is really a work of art. The crisp and dark acid etched panels and spine provide a gorgeous display of: a hunter aiming towards a bull and cow elk in the forest along with a grouse sitting on a tree limb (obverse), six dogs taking down a boar with a hunter not far behind and a hummingbird to the to the top (reverse) and an oak leaf and acorn motif with a distributor mark, which reads: “W. Michovius Cottbus” (spine). The blade is stamped with the very early maker mark to the reverse with the squirrel “Carl Eickhorn Solingen”. The blade rates Exc++/NM. It shows age grey and surface scratches throughout. The original green felt buffer pad remains intact. The scabbard is made out of a stitched together black tanned leather base (body) with two stapled-on gilded brass scalloped fittings. The lower fitting has several bruises and is marked: “26” to the bottom. The top fitting’s obverse features an acorn lug. The scabbard sits securely up against the hilt. The langet features a buck. The cast brass d-guard hilt has a motif of intertwining ribbon and oak leaves with a deer hoof to the end. The ferrule has an Eickhorn squirrel. The grip is made out of two choice bone plates that have three acorns to either side. The two reverse top ones are likely replacements. The brass has all been gold gilded and has beautifully matching patina. A wonderful example.
