A M39 Dolch für Staatsbeamte (Government Official Daggers)by Carl Eickhorn of Solingen. Approximately 1 in 4 Government Official Daggers were manufactured by the Carl Eickhorn firm. Unlike Puma, Pack and Holler who are even rarer. Eickhorn cast their own components. Most consider these to be superior in quality and are thus highly prized by collectors. The beautiful Eickhorn fittings throughout are a fine sight to the eye with all of the silvering intact. The piece does not look to have been cleaned. The pommel features a choice eagle head which looks to the viewer's left. The features to the head all remain crisp as to the extended brow over the eye, the hit-free reverse of the eagle's head which cantilevers outward and to the fine beak which is squared at the tip. The two spanner take-down holes do not appear to have been pierced. The backstrap has the fine trim lines running along the borders with an ending "V' design at about halfway down the backstrap. The left side cover plate is the silvered nickel type. Below the grip is the textbook Eickhorn ferrule having the two deep grooves which were part of the casting. The cross guard is just the best. It features a nicely detailed eagle with his outstretched wings that point upward at the tips. The eagle clutches a large wreath containing a swastika. The grip plates are quite beautiful, being a gold color simulating mother-of-pearl with all of the swirls twirls in the celluloid surfaces. A really beautiful hilt here. The silver-plated scabbard is a fine example being straight throughout. It reflects fine pebbled panels on both sides. The carrying bands are composed of crisp overlapping oak leaves and acorns. The throat is retained by two headless side screws which we only see on initial production pieces. It has developed a spotted patina. (The later pieces had the one screw in the center of the reverse scabbard). The blade is also a beauty being factory bright, having a couple of very light surface blemishes. The blade easily grades at near full mint, still having all cross grain and needle-like tip. The 1935-41 Eickhorn trademark is a fine dark etch. The original off white leather blade washer is in place. Complete with an original 43cm porteppe. If you are looking for a fine Eickhorn Government Official piece, this one grade right at the top!
