A Heer Ärmelschild Demjansk by 4.5 - Unknown Maker. Instituted April 25, 1943, the Demjansk Arm Shield was awarded to all members of the Wehrmacht or persons subordinate to the Wehrmacht who honorably took part in the defense of the Demjansk pocket. It is constructed out of a die stamped piece of steel that has been silver washed and attached by four prongs to a steel plate in between an oval green wool backing. The obverse depicts, from the top down; a closed winged national eagle clutching a wreathed swastika in its talons, beside two fortified bunkers and is above “Demjansk”. Below is a frontal view of a plane, two crossed broad swords and “1942” to the very bottom. This is all in a shield type outline that is surrounded by a quality oval green wool backing. The reverse shows a green faded paper backing with impressions for four and a round plate. There is oxidization spotting throughout. It measures 2 3/8 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches tall. A fine piece.
