United States – Named – Navy Model 1852 Officer’s Dress Sword made in Solingen, Germany and distributed by Hilborn - Hamburger Inc. of New York. The sword comes with the portepee, bag and its matching carry case. The Model 1852 Naval Officers Sword entered service in 1852 and was in use during the American Civil War, requirements were suspended during WWII. The German made, stainless steel, straight, single edged, fullered, triple etched, 31 7/8-inch-long blade on this one looks great. The acid etched panels provide a beautiful display of: anchors, stars, Navy images, a mast, crossed trident and axe, a “USN” marked flag, an eagle, rope and a bannered “USN”. The spine also displays a wonderful laurel leaf and berry motif. The obverse is jeweler engraved to a: “E. T. Powell” and also reads: “Stainless” above a Star of David that reads “Proved” to the center. The reverse is marked: “Germany”, above the H-H Eagle Trademark, “Hilborn - Hamburger Inc. New York” and above “Made in Germany Solingen”. The white felt buffer pad remains intact. The scabbard body is made out of a non-magnetic base that has been covered in a textured blackened tanned leather. It features dual decorative lines running lengthways to the front and back. There are three gilded brass fittings which feature; a drag with a triple zig-zag line pattern border and a decorative sea creature to the base, a mid-band which has a knotted rope design, holding a ring, bordered in a zig-zag line pattern and a top-fitting with a knotted rope design holding a ring and a zig-zag lined edge. They are each secured with two side screws. The lower fitting has been pushed up against the screws. The mid-band is marked: “36” to the edge. The integral throat is marked: “Germany”. The multi-piece cast brass gilded partial basket hilt features a decorative design of: “dolphin” heads, oak leaf and acorns and a bannered “USN”. The basket and handguard are one piece and the pommel cap and oval pommel top are separate pieces. The pommel top features an eagle peached on a wrapped-up rope surrounded by stars. The grip is made of a plastic white faux ray skin, that is wrapped in a decorative triple twisted brass wire wrap. The correct gold bullion portepee is attached. The sword comes with is issue light yellow soft fabric cloth bag. The string is lost. It shows only minor staining throughout. All the stitching remains intact. Also included is its matching blackened tanned leather carry case. It is initialed and armed forces marked, in gold foil: “E.T.P.” “U.S.N.”. It shows only minor age throughout. It is Hilborn - Hamburger Inc. Vitalon distributor/maker marked under the flap. The buckles continue to work well. The black plastic handle and attachment rings remain intact. All the accessories!
