The 35 1/2" blade of this very rare pattern is VG with only some very light pitting at the tip. It does show signs of past cleaning which in no way detracts from the overall appearance. The three branch hilt is clean but has medium pitting overall. The wood grip is missing the leather covering. The scabbard matches the hilt quite nicely and has #38 stamped at the throat. The overall appearance is much better than it reads. This rare pattern sword was carried by many troopers at the famous Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. This very rare pattern word was replaced by the P.1853 (Reference: Robson Swords of the British Army #21) The lack of a British war dept. ownership arrow suggests this example was for export.
