Great Britain, WWI - Shame Cross “Schandkreuz” 1914. An anti-German propaganda medal exploiting the destruction of Belgian and French cities on or near the Western Front by between August and October 1914. These were made in Britain and sold to raise funds for the war effort. It is constructed out of a die cast iron base that has been blackened. The obverse features a pattée style cross that has a centrally placed embossed “W” (cypher of King Wilhelm I & II), below a Christian cross and above “1914” (lower arm), and reads: “Rheims” (left arm), “Louvain” (right arm) and “Amiens” (top arm). The reverse features the same “W”, cross and date and reads: “Antwerp” (left arm), “Ghent” (right arm) and “Dinant” (top arm). To the top is an integral loop. It measures 1 3/4 inches wide by 2 inches tall. A unique piece.
