Union of South Africa, WWII - Africa Service Medal 1939-1945, named to E. U. Carletti of the South African Cape Corps (Service Number: C276587). Instituted December 23, 1943, the Africa Service Medal 1939-1945 was awarded to members of the Union Defense Forces, the South African Police and the South African Railways Police, for volunteer war service between September 6, 1939, and September 2, 1945. It is constructed out of a die stamped cupro-nickel base that has been silver plated. The round shaped obverse depicts the continent of Africa, surrounded by “Africa Service Medal Afrikadiens-Medalje" (English and Afrikaans). The reverse shows a prancing springbok against a landscape background. To the top is a single toe claw mount, with a straight non-swivel suspender, that holds 4 inches of green, orange and red ribbon. The rim is officially impressed: “C276587 E. U. Carletti”. The award measures 36mm in diameter. Nice patina.
