A 1st Model - Deutsche Silberne Verdienstmedaille mit Schwerter 1939-43. The Order of Merit of the German Eagle, was instituted May 1, 1937 (reorganized April 29, 1939, and again on December 27th 1943), and was awarded to foreign nationals who had made a meritorious contribution to the German Reich on the recommendation of the Reich Minister for Foreign Affairs. It is constructed out of die struck 835 silver content base. The round shaped obverse features a Maltese style cross that has four national eagles between each of the crosses arms on a smooth round background with two cross broad swords above it soldered to the loop. The reverse reads, in Gothic style script: “Deutsche Verdienstemedaille” on a smooth round background. The bottom rim is marked with a crescent moon and “835 Pr. Münze Berlin” (silver content designation and Official State Mint). To the top is a soldered-on loop and suspension ring that hold a tri-color (red, white and black) rayon ribbon. The award measures 1 ½ inches in diameter. A beautiful silver patina.
