The Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal (CGDSM) was established on August 4, 1949, and was presented to coast guardsmen for "Exceptionally meritorious service to the government in a duty of great responsibility.”. It was first awarded in 1961. It is constructed out of a brass base that has been gold gilded with polished highlights. The obverse features a sailing ship at sea surrounded by “U.S. Coast Guard Distinguished Service”. The reverse features the US coast guard logo above a banner. The top has an integral loop and ring which holds a light blue, white and purple ribbon. The reverse has a bar that is maker marked “Graco – GI” with a pin, hinge and catch assembly. The award measures 1 5/16 inches in diameter.
