United Kingdom, Commonwealth, WWII - War Medal 1939-1934. Instituted August 16, 1945, The War Medal 1939-1945, was awarded to full-time in the Armed Forces or the Merchant Navy, who had served at least 28 days between September 3, 1939, and September 2, 1945. It is constructed out of a die stamped cupro-nickel (silver for Canadians) base that has been silver washed. The round shaped obverse features the left facing effigy of a crowned King George VI, surrounded by “Georgics VI D: BR: OMN: REX ET Indiae Imp:”. The reverse features a lion standing on the body of a double headed dragon, with “1939-1945” to the top right. To the top is a single toe claw mount, that holds a straight swivel suspender that holds a red, blue and white ribbon. The rim is unmarked. The award measures 1 7/16 inches in diameter.
