United Kingdom WWII – Unissued the Defence Medal in Packet. Instituted August 16, 1945, the Defence Medal was a campaign medal awarded to citizens of the British Commonwealth for both non-operational military and certain types of civilian war service during the WWII. It is constructed out of a die stamped cupro-nickel base that has been silver plated. The round shaped obverse features the left facing effigy of King George VI, above a small “HP” (designer - Humphrey Paget), surrounded by “Georgivs VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP.” (George 6th, by the grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India). The reverse displays the Royal Crown on top of a small oak tree, this is flanked by a lion and lioness and “1939”/”1945” all above: “The Defence Medal”. To the top is a single-toe claw mount and a non-swiveling straight bar suspender that holds approximately 4 inches of orange, green and black ribbon. The award measures 1 7/16 inches in diameter. It comes housed in its original issue cellophane packet. It measures 2 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches tall.
