France, Imperial War - Croix de guerre - Troisième Rébulique (1870-1940). Instituted April 2, 1915, the War Cross was awarded to military units/soldiers who distinguished themselves by acts of heroism involving combat with the enemy. It is constructed out of a three piece die cast/stamped bronze base that has been soldered together and bronze washed. The obverse features a pattée style cross with two crossed broad swords behind a centrally placed bust of Marianne, surrounded by “Republic Francaise” with a dual laurel leaf cluster to the bottom. The reverse features the same cross and swords with a centrally placed “1914-1918”. To the top is decorative ball loop and ring which holds 4 1/2 inches of green and red ribbon. It looks as though a star may have been on it at some point. The reverse holds the appropriate pin assembly. The award measures 1 7/16 of an inch wide and tall.
