Queen’s South Africa Medal with Clasps

Great Britain, Second Boer War - Queen’s South Africa Medal with “South Africa 1901” date clasp, “Transvaal” state clasp and “Cape Colony” state clasp (which would also qualify the recipient for the “Natal” claps) awarded to a Civilian (WHRL Rank) J. M. Jackson of the Army Service Corp (Medal Roll shows his service number to be 381). Instituted by Queen Victoria in 1900, the Queen’s South Africa Medal was awarded to Military Personnel and Civilians who served in South Africa during the Second Boer War from October 11, 1899 to May 31, 1902. It is constructed out of a die stamped silver base. The obverse features the left facing veiled bust of Queen Victoria, partially surrounded by an arched: “Victoria Regina et Imperatrix”. The reverse shows Britannia holding the Union Jack Flag in her left hand and a wreath in her right, in front of troops marching inland from the coast. To the left of Britannia are two war ships, a trident and Britannia’s shield on the ground. To the left it reads: “South” and “Africa”, right. The edge is nicely engraved: “CIV: WHLR: J. M. Jackson A.S.C.”. To the top is a single toe claw mount, with a nail head, that holds a straight swivel suspender that attaches three clasps, noted above, in roller chain fashion. There is a 4-inch red, blue and orange ribbon running through the clasps and suspender. The ribbon has some pin prick holes to it. The award features beautiful patina. The medal measures 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
