This is THE most desirable 2nd Class Iron Cross of all! A “Schinkel B” Prototype - Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse by Deschler & Sohn of München. The “Schinkel B” cross was the very first, of three, Iron Cross 2nd Class design to be proposed. The other two were; the Schinkel-Form A (similar to the imperial EKII) and the most common type, which was clearly accepted and approved.
The award is a multi-piece, die struck construction that has been soldered together. The single piece core is constructed out of an iron metal base that has been black enamel painted. The two-piece frame is constructed out of a nickel silver base that has been silver washed. A final protectant lacquer was applied over the entire award. The obverse features; a pattée style cross that has a centrally placed embossed mobile swastika and “1939” (with a Round 3) to the lower arm, which is all on a black base and surrounded by a silvered ribbed/beaded row and a flat outlying border. The reverse features that same black base with a raised “1813” to the lower arm and has that same ribbed and flat outlying boarder. To the top is a small lug and a soldered-on loop and ring which holds a small piece of ribbon. The paint remains 98% intact and the frame looks great! The cross measures 44mm wide and tall. Only a handful of these are known in the market. This piece came out of the most esteemed spange/eki/ekii collection in the world. Incredibly RARE and DESIRABLE! Expensive? Yes, but these almost never come to market, and I don't really care to sell it
