Early SA Dagger - August Merten With Motto Variation The crossguards are in fine condition and do not look have been cleaned, having desirable even patination. The tang nut appears to have never been off the dagger. The reverse of the lower guard is Gruppe marked "S". The grip is in choice condition and perfectly fits the guard. The SA runes button retains perfect enamel, and the nickel grip eagle is the type with a point behind its head. This bird retains crisp detailing throughout. The scabbard is straight and retains 100% of the original anodized finish though it is thinning and exhibits age. The scabbard mounts match the hilt perfectly and remain in good condition. The lower fitting and ball have some minor damage. The original screws are in place and unturned. The blade of this example exhibits age throughout, and the SA motto is the variation that is occasionally encountered on this maker being etched upside down. Yes there were Mondays during the third Reich. The reverse ricasso is marked with the M trademark of the Merten firm, with the initial set atop a pair of oak leaves. The blade shoulders perfectly meet the lower guards. The Merten firm product is common, rating a 5 on the McSARR scale but this example has the noteworthy motto variation.
