War Medal 1939-1945
The War Medal was awarded to many different branches of the military for 28 days of service. It is constructed out of copper nickel base. The round obverse depicts the face of King George VI, with a crown, and the writing “PM” (designer Percy Metcalfe), just under his neckline. Encircling the effigy reads “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP:” The reverse depicts a lion standing upon a two headed dragon, one of the heads which is that of an eagle, while the other is a dragon. To the top right of the reverse reads “1939 1945”, while to the left of the medal in small printing reads “ECRP” (designer Edward Carter Preston). To the top there is a non-swiveling straight bar suspender mount that holds a piece of red, blue and white (British Union Jack colors) ribbon. The ribbon has been folded back to shape. The rim reads: “Patrick C Kerr”. It measures 36mm in diameter.
