A Cased Spanish Militärmedaille by Industrias Egaña of Motrico. The Spanish Military Medal was instituted July 1st 1918 and was awarded for heroic acts in the face of the enemy. It is constructed out of a die struck silvered buntmetall base. The round shaped obverse features Queen Isabella II, holding a laurel leaf crown in her outstretched right hand, leaning on a large shield with a lion head to her left on top of a beach scene with a with a setting sun and a small “Egaña” (maker mark). This is encircled by a half laurel and berry, half oak leaf wreath, that is flanked by two rampant lions, underneath a single castle and above “Al Merito En Campaña”. The reverse features the Coat of arms under Franco’s Spain, which is encircled the same as the front, void the script. To the very top of the award is a soldered on ball loop and ring. The ring holds approximately 3 inches of white, red and yellow silk/rayon ribbon that has been folded over and stitched to a typical Spanish rectangular gilded brass bar, with a well working pin assembly to the reverse. The award measures 1 5/8 inches in diameter. Many variations of this award exist. The award comes housed in its appropriate issue case that is matching the award. It is your typical wood/cardboard base that is covered in a blue and back simulated snake skin covering. The top lid reads: “Industrias Egaña Motrico” in pressed gold foil. The interior is lined in a purple felt. The ‘mushroom head’ push button and hinge work well. Only minor age to the exterior edges. A quality piece with several variations! The highest Spanish bravery award.
