A 2. Klasse Silber Spanien-Kreuz ohne Schwerter by Paul Meybauer of Berlin. Those non-combatants who distinguished themselves above and beyond the call of duty were presented with the Spanish Cross in Silver, and there were 327 Crosses of that grade awarded. It is a multi-piece construction made out of a die struck 900 silver content base that has been black burnished, has frosted highlights and was finished in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a convex pebbled Maltese style cross with four Luftwaffe eagles to each corner, that has an encircled (separately soldered on) mobile swastika to the center. The full back concave reverse is marked with Meybauers imperial marker mark and “900” (silver content designation). It also has a soldered on c-shaped catch, soldered on block hinge and coke bottle pin, all of which are in well working condition. The detail and patina is beautiful! It measures approximately 2 3/16 inches wide and tall. The award comes housed in its appropriate case. It was added at a later time. It is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained blue leather. To the front is a multi-piece steel, rectangular spring loaded closure button. To the back is a steel, staggered, piano hinge that is covered in the simulated leather. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a blue fibrous felt material that outlines the pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is constructed out of a blue silk-rayon like material and has an underlying pad. It has the odd mark but is in wonderful condition! The case measures approximately 3 inches wide by 3 1/8 inches deep and 1 inch thick. A great assembly, a gorgeous display piece!
