THE Textbook Example - Pilot Observer Badge in Bullion

This is the exact badge featured on page 390 of “The German Luftwaffe Pilot and Combined Pilot and Observer Badges of World War II 1933-1945” by Sebastien Talbot and Stephan Papke. An unissued Gemeinsames Flugzeugführer- und Beobachterabzeichen für Offiziere der Luftwaffe. The Pilot / Observer badge was instituted January 19th 1935 and was awarded to personnel who qualified as both a pilot and observer. The cloth variation of the pilot/observer badge was only authorized for wear by Officers, until November 18th 1937 where it was extended to EM’s and NCO’s. May 8th 1942 production was discontinued. It is constructed out of hand embroidered gold and silver bullion work, stitched to a blue grey backing and black buckram backing. The obverse features a silvered centrally placed massive swooping Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is above a gold half laurel leaf and berry / half oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom and all lies on a blue grey base. The reverse displays the hand stitching and back backing. The obverse displays beautiful details throughout the eagle and wreath. It is in unissued condition. It measures approximately 2 3/4 inches wide by 2 1/4 inches tall. Rare, stunning, crisp quality at its best!
