Naval Combat Clasp by S&L

Rare in the extreme. These were only awarded war time for a few months before the close of hostilities. Awarded for meritorious actions which were not covered by existing decorations, this rare bird was instituted late war by Admiral Donitz and it never got as far as to give to a manufacturer! Wartime examples are all hand made and unique. This particular piece is the 1957 version that was manufactured by S&L. The authorized design was published in the Bundesanzeiger in February 1958 as a follow up to the 1957 Ordensgesetz (image attached at end of photo's). Ok I'll say it right now, Yes I know that these were and are presently being offered in the market as pre-1945 by some, and BTW, selling for $1000+. Well IMHO these were post-war produced by S&L as an official 1957 award. Ok with that out if the way, this is made of tombak with a nickel catch. The obverse depicts a centrally placed fouled anchor, on a burnished background, which is surrounded by a rope pattern and has oak leaves to either side. To the reverse it features a nickel hinge and tombak catch and pin. A really cool and rare piece to find!
