A rare award! The 5th Don Cossack Cavalry Regiment was the first completely Russian unit, with its own officers, to fight for the Germans. It is constructed out of a die struck aluminum base that has been silvered washed and painted with black, blue and red enamel work. The obverse features; a pattee style cross that has a centrally placed encircled black mobile swastika with “5” (top arm), “KOHO” (left arm), “HOB” (right arm), “28X 1941” (bottom arm) and is above two crossed shashka swords and a blue/red shield. The Cyrillic characters translate to the name of the commander Kononov. The semi-hollow pebbled back shows a vertically crimped steel pin that remains in well working condition. The badge shows the correct features and die flaws. The paint work is in excellent condition! It measures approximately 1 13/16 inches wide and tall. Beautiful and rare!
