An excellent Kreigsmarine 1st Variation "8-Wave Type" Minesweeper Badge by Rudolf Karneth & Sohn! It is constructed out of a die struck tombak base that has been gold gilded, silver washed and blackened. The obverse depicts an explosion coming out of the water, this is below a Kriegsmarine eagle (with out-stretched wings, clutching a swastika within its talons), which is surrounded by an oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together on the bottom. The reverse of the badge shows the correct maker marked "R.K." (Rudolf Karneth & Sohn, Gablonz). It also shows the tombak; integral stamped block hinge, soldered round wire catch and coke bottle pin. The unique eagle head and details throughout are excellent! Beautiful detail, gilding, silvering and blacking! It measures approximately 2 3/16 inches high by 1 ¾ inches wide. See Vol. 1 page 378 of Weber & Skora's "The Kriegsmarine Awards" book. A beautiful piece!
