Here we have a Prussian commemorative cross for 1866 with the ?Treuen Kriegern' inscription. The medal was instituted by King Wilhelm I on 20 September 1866 following the victorious war against Austria and its German allies. There are four versions, this is the third. It is constructed out of a die struck bronze base that has been bronze washed. The obverse features a pattée alésée style cross with a centrally placed crowned Prussian gripping a cannon in its talons surrounded by a laurel leaf wreath and reads "Treuen" (top), "Krie-" (left), "Gern" (right) and "1866" (bottom) to each arm of the cross. The reverse features the "WR" cipher for King Wilhelm I surrounded by "Preussens Siegreichem Heere" (Prussia's victorious armies) and depicts a crown (top), "Gott Mit Ihm" (left), "War Uns Sei" (right) and "Die Ehre" (bottom) translating to God was with us. To Him be the glory. To the top is a soldered loop and ring. The medal was cast from the bronze of captured Austrian cannon (medal-medaille). It measures approximately 1 3/8 inches wide by 1 7/8 inches tall. A cool piece!
