An extremely rare dagger. This example has internally marked "P.A" crossguards with nice precise accent grooves and a slightly greenish tint. The fittings throughout are the early nickel variety. The reverse side of the lower guard is Roman numeral district stamped "I ". The under side is serial numbered "67840". A preliminary search indicates the owner was not an officer however a more through search may reveal some further information. The grip has a slim appearance with high ridges very typical of what we see with Herder product. It shows minor wear and some chips along the upper grip edge near the crossguard. The grip eagle is the "point behind the head" version and shows minor wear. The overall grip to guard fit is typical. The SS runes button is the nickel style having a flat surface installed at approximately the 11 o'clock position. The bright blade shows normal runner marks rating a Exc+/Exc++. The SS motto is deeply etched having 100% burnish. There is one area near the crossguard that has been polished, probably as a result of the School dedication on the reverse. The reverse ricasso is matching etched with the Herder trademark, a double set of ovals containing the firm name logo and location. Best of all the reverse blade is etched with a "Furth" etching "SS- Sportschule Furth II 5. Lehgang 8.11.- 20.12.34" with very dark burnish. The candidates sent to the school brought along their daggers and prior to graduation a local did the etch. These would have been presented back to the graduates no doubt at some grandiose ceremony. The scabbard shell is straight throughout and has 99% of anodizing remaining and traces of factory lacquer. The reverse shows some wear. The fitting all match the patina of the hilt. The ball has suffered a hit. The throat is stamped with the same serial number matching the lower crossguard, "67840". A wonderful example I am proud to have sold.
