Fireman's Dress Bayonets

FI-35 Fire Official's Dress Axe with Hangers
This example is a plated one. The head has the tradition al shape with the cut outs to the business end and a claw to the back. It is secured with a ornate button that is secured with a dome-head screw. Running down from the head to the front and back are two escutcheon plates each with a carry ring. The other fittings are matching in color and patina to include the side plates and the bottom ball fitting. The grip itself has a thick lacquer paint that shows minor wear to the sides. Finishing the axe is a set of period hangers. These came in as many variations as there were makers. These came with the piece and rightly will stay with it. A wonderfully complete piece that is missing from most collections. Overall Exc++/NM

FI-24 Sawback Fireman's Dagger Bayonet Style
Very heavy and very cool piece. This model is described in original catalogs as "Sawback Bayonet Style". I guess because the daggers were also being offered at the time. Blade is a plated example that has been retipped. The sawback is symbolic of the fire fighters need to cut away fallen timbers. The plating shows minor wear and scuffs. The blade is unmarked. The hilt is brass based to include the clamshell. Scabbard has matching brass fittings that are shrunk fit to a leather body with dual decorative lined running done both obverse and reverse. The stitching is all intact. Liners are wooden. Similar example can be seen in Eickhorn's 1908 catalogue as model 743. This is also illustrated in Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany by Tom Johnson pg 229 and Angolia's Sword reference pg 488 Overall Exc

Police Bayonets

POL-20 Krebs Private Purchase Short Police Bayonet
Here's a rare variation of a mid-war bayo that few have in their collections. 90% of the Police bayo's you ever find are the cut-down Weimar type. These private purchase examples were also available at extra cost for the well heeled Officer. The private purchase examples are typically lighter and smaller making them easier to carry than the common heavy chunky cut-down Wiemar era std types. This particular example has a plated blade that shows lots of age grey, it is a VG/Exc example with the correct stamped Krebs maker mark. The stamp is deeply executed. No sharpening. The aluminum based hilt of this example is about 80% of std size, it's finer and more elegant than it's std issue cousin. It shows minor wear. The stag grip plates are a nice brown horn. The edges have golden color, as do the trimmed surfaces. They are retained by two dressed rivets. The grip insignia is a tight aluminum one with honest wear. Steel scabbard shell shows minor wear with a small dent to the reverse and some minor oxidizing. The shell is fitted with solid nickel scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and are in fine shape with wear but no damage. The lower is secured with a staple and the upper by two intact screws. Nicely finishing this one is a black dress frog and Police portepee. Overall Exc/Exc+

POL-25 Hörster Slotted Municipal Police Bayonet
Hard to find these bayo's in the slotted version. This one is has a quality double marked and proofed nickel plated blade in Exc++ condition. There are a couple scuffs and small nicks to the "cutting" edge but no grey, sharpening or plating loss so often common on these. The hilt of this example is in good shape showing honest wear to the solid nickel fittings to include some taps to the back of the hilt. The release button assembly is steel as it should be. The plating is gone from it as is normally seen on these slotted versions. The reverse is stamped "S.Kz.71." matching the scabbard. The stamp indicates issue to Schutzpolizei Polizeiverwaltung Koblenz. The grip plates are flawless with the correct pinned police eagle. They are retained by two dressed aluminum rivets. The grip insignia is a tight aluminum one with honest wear. Scabbard shell is in good shape with the two trim lines which run the length of the edges. It does show normal scuffs from wear and could use some love with some shoe wax that would really spiff this up. The stitching is all intact. The shell is fitted with nickel plated  scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and show wear with minor plating loss at the ball and freckling. They are held by staples in the usual manner. Exc++

POL-21 Höller Municipal Police Bayonet
Nice bayonet with all the accoutrements. Cut down Weimar period Police bayo, as most of these were. This one is heavy brass based with good nickel plating. The blade is clean with just a hint of age grey towards the tip, The tip also has the slightest of waves to the last 2mm, I have gone to extreme lengths here to give you the worse possible view. The hilt of this example is a beauty, showing excellent finish I can see nowhere the plating has worn through showing the brass base. The reverse is stamped, "S.D.V.101.R.I" matching the scabbard. The stamp indicates issue to Schutzpolizei Polizeiverwaltung Düsseldorf. The spine is also proofed. The grip plates are flawless with the correct pinned police eagle. They are retained by two dressed aluminum rivets. The grip insignia is a tight aluminum one with honest wear. Scabbard shell is in good shape with normal wear, being black with the two trim lines which run the length of the edges. The stitching is all intact. The shell is fitted with nickel plated  scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and show some minor plating loss to the lower reverse. They are held by staples in the usual manner. Finishing this piece is the original frog and nice portepee. Overall Exc++

POL-23 Lüneschloss Municipal Police Bayonet
This one is has a nice maker marked and proofed nickel plated blade in NM condition. There is evidence it was cleaned along the way but no grey, sharpening or plating loss. The hilt of this example is in good shape showing light wear to the solid nickel fittings. The plating to the hilt rates 100%. The reverse is stamped "S.D.IV.813." matching the scabbard. The stamp indicates issue to Schutzpolizei Polizeiverwaltung Düsseldorf. The grip plates are damage free just showing light wear. The correct pinned police eagle shows good detail with honest wear. The plates are retained by two dressed aluminum rivets. Scabbard shell is in good shape with the two trim lines which run the length of the edges. It does show the lightest evidence of age. The stitching is all intact. The shell is fitted with undented nickel plated scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and show light wear. They are held by staples in the usual manner. Finally this comes with a dated and maker marked frog with a worn but serviceable portepee. Oh, the bit of black on the portepee is cause some of the leather has crazed and stuck to the ball.  Exc++

PO-31 Ewald Cleff Municipal Police Bayonet
Nickel plated blade is factory shortened example, as 90% of these are. This one has the inspection stamp on the spine and is stamped with the markers name spelled out top the reverse, interesting to see this maker as this is the first example of Cleff I've ever come across. The blade is a Exc ++ example. There are a few odd scuffs but no abuse. No gray, sharpening, plating loss or damage, just light normal wear. The early brass based hilt of this example is in good shape with 98% of plating intact. The only loss being a bit under the riccasso. The blade has a factory buffer in place. The crossguard is precisely stamped "S.Op.IV.408" matching the scabbard. For those of you who enjoy knowing the providence of these, the stamping confirms issue to the Schutzpolizei unit Polizeiverwaltung Oppeln. The stag grip plates are a nice brown horn. They show only light wear with no chips or cracks. The edges have golden colour, as do the trimmed surfaces. They are retained by two dressed aluminium rivets. The grip insignia is a correctly pinned, not glued aluminium one with normal wear. Scabbard shell shows wear and evidence of old creases and overall is in good shape, being black with the two trim lines which run the length of the edges. The schell is fitted with undented solid nickel mounts. These have scalloped edges and are in fine shape showing only minor period wear. They are held by staples in the usual manner. All the scabbard stitches are intact. Overall Exc++

POL-26 Alcoso Municipal Police Bayonet
Tough to find these in superior condition, finally one you will be happy with. Cut down Weimar period Police bayo, as most of these were. This one is heavy brass based with good nickel plating. The blade is clean with no gray, age nicks, no nothing. Certainly NM. The hilt of this example is a beauty, showing excellent finish I can see nowhere the plating has worn through showing the brass base. The reverse is stamped, "S.M.IV.1472" matching the scabbard. The stamp indicates issue to Schutzpolizei Polizeiverwaltung Münster. The spine is also proofed. The grip plates are flawless with the correct pinned police eagle. They are retained by two dressed aluminum rivets. The grip insignia is a tight aluminum one with honest wear. Scabbard shell is in good shape with only light wear, being black with the two trim lines which run the length of the edges. The stitching is all intact but you can tell that this has a crease to the lower obverse. The shell is fitted with nickel plated scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and have no plating loss just light evidence of use. They are held by staples in the usual manner. Finishing this piece is the original police marked frog with early copper rivets. It's in great shape, nice and supple. Overall Exc++/NM

POL-24 Hörster Slotted Rural Police Bayonet
Hard to find these bayo's in the rural version. This one is has a quality double marked and proofed nickel plated blade in Exc++ condition. There are a couple scuffs and light mark from normal use but no grey, sharpening or plating loss so often common on these. The hilt of this example is in good shape showing honest wear to the solid nickel fittings. The reverse is stamped "L.Hi.89." matching the scabbard. The stamp indicates issue to Landjägerei Polizeiverwaltung Hildesheim. The grip plates are in good shape being free of chips and cracks. They have aged to a pleasing yellow tone with the correct pinned police eagle. They are retained by two dressed aluminum rivets. The grip insignia is a tight aluminum one with honest wear. Scabbard shell is in good shape with the two trim lines which run the length of the edges. It does show normal scuffs from wear and evidence of a fold at some point to the front 3" up from the lower fitting. I'm tempted to make this "go away" with a bit of shoe polish but that, I leave to you. The stitching is all intact. The shell is fitted with nickel plated  scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and show wear with a wee dent to the lower just up from the ball. Some of plating is worn off on the ball exposing the brass base. Finally the original brown rural frog remains on this as well as the original portepee. The frog is maker marked and dated. Shoot the frog itself is far rarer than the bayo! Look how the portepee is "welded" to the frog. I love this stuff!! One strap of the portepee is busted and rather than have any further damage the ball is zip tied to the scabbard. Exc++

POL-27 Lüneschloss Municipal Police Bayonet
This one is has a nice clean maker marked and proofed nickel plated blade in Exc++/NM condition. There is just the lightest shadow of age towards the tip, no sharpening or plating loss. The hilt of this example is in good shape showing light wear to the solid nickel fittings. The plating to the hilt is worn about the bird head beak. The reverse is stamped "S.D.IV.93." matching the scabbard. It does show light use but no abuse. The stitching is all intact. The shell is fitted with nickel plated scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and show wear to include bruises and small hits. The hilt of this example is in good shape showing light wear to the solid nickel fittings. The plating to the hilt rates 100%. The reverse is stamped "S.D.IV.128." matching the scabbard. The stamp indicates issue to Schutzpolizei Polizeiverwaltung Düsseldorf. The grip plates are damage free just showing light wear. The correct pinned police eagle shows good detail with honest wear. The plates are retained by two dressed aluminum rivets. Scabbard shell is in good shape with the two trim lines which run the length of the edges being well worn. The stitching is all intact. The shell is fitted with nickel plated brass scabbard mounts. These have scalloped edges and show light wear including a small dent to the lower obverse. They are held by staples in the usual manner. Finally this comes with a well crazed hard frog that's never been off the piece. It's unmarked and some of the leather has marked the portepee. The portepee is in poor shape showing wear and damage to the leather strap.  Exc++
