Iron Cross/War Merit/Wound Badges

Please note that pre-1939 Iron Crosses are found in the Imperial Medals section

M-605 Cased German Cross in Gold

Love these decorations! Perhaps the most complex of all 3rd Reich awards to construct this award is made from 5 pieces of tombac and alloy with detailed enamel and gilt. This example is 100% correct and textbook in construction. I would say this award is 9 out of 10 in condition. The only wear I could find was at the very end of the black rays. Those of you familiar with these know that the tips of these rays is the first place we see wear in original examples. I would say 99.5% of the black finish is intact. The silver wash on the base looks good. The gold wreath gilt is in fine shape being 100% intact, nice and bright, not dull and brassy. I spent a long time looking at the enamel work on this one. Taking great pains to photograph this one you can see clearly all the details. BTW sorry about the reflections, I'm sure you would give me credit if you saw all the pics I rejected to get these! Keep in mind guys these are blown up 10x bigger than reality! There are 2 fine scratches about 2mm in length in the center of the swas and there is a defect at the end of one arm to the left. I looked at this for a long time under an eye loop and can't decide of it's a factory defect or a chip so I'll err on the safe side and call it a microscopic chip. The enamel work is beautifully set off by the silver backgound that's nicely patinaed. The whole badge is assembled using 4 circular hollow rivets. The hinge and catch are textbook. Finally the pin is maker marked confirming what we know from the construction details, that this is a Zimmerman quality product. Look at all the silver wash remaining to the reverse!! Nicely framing this award is the factory case. This case top is surrounded by a gold line on the side framing the lid. The inside of the cover is in silky material with the usual strip hiding the hinge. The hinge is visible from the exterior and is magnetic. The inside of the case has the insert with the correct shape to accept the hinge/catch assembly. Much of the flocking is worn, The inside of the case on the bottom has the same flocking disguising the orifice in the insert. We know that Zimmerman used this type flocking down there so the case matches the award. A beauty award I am pleased to be able to offer my clients. NM
