HJ Knives

HJL-5 E. & F. Hörster Hitler Youth Leader
Always a pleasure to handle these elegant pieces truly this is Solingen quality and workmanship at it's best! I say that but it's also always a challenge to buy these. Reproductions abound! Blade is a very good quality plated example. Just a bit of age, the worse being a bit of gray above the RZM etch. The very tip appears to be slightly repointed. The motto is perfectly executed and the letters are correctly shaped right down to the exclamation mark! Blade is conservatively Exc+. Correct thick leather buffer is intact. The hilt fittings are plated with traces of factory lacquer remaining. The grip is tightly wire wrapped with the original wire. The rope pattern that surrounds the gently upswept crossguard is even and matches that of the pommel. Top of the pommel has the right HJ diamond. The pommel is secured with two headless screws. Scabbard is wrapped with original fine leather. showing light period wear but it's all intact! The plating on the scabbard is excellent. The upper obverse fitting has the HJ eagle bearing a sword and hammer in each talon. A swastika is on the chest. It is correctly secured with a single unturned reverse screw. The entire piece has even patina. If you've been in the market for a HJ Leader but they always seem to be out of reach here is an example priced to sell! Exc+/Exc++

HJ-211 Early H & F Lauterjung HJ Knife
Blade shows some minor age and scuffs as well as some roughness to the cutting edge. It has been cleaned along the way and there are light scratches from this. The motto is fairly clear. The maker mark is stamped nice and deep. This example has no riccaso or RZM designation as I would expect on an early piece. Original buffer is intact. Blade is Exc/Exc+. Fittings are plated steel with 98% of the original plating intact. Grip plates I've been studying they are a bit unusual as they are secured with aluminum rivets, most of these early piece used nickel or brass rivets. One of the rivets also appears to have been poorly installed. I'm going to err on the safe side here and call these grip plates replaced. I believe them to be pre-1945 just someone used them to replace what may have been a damaged set. The diamond is perfect. Brown LFS marked scabbard leather is in fine shape with light wear but no damage or dry rot. The body shows minor wear with an good painted finish and 90% of the original paint intact. It is dent free. Runner retains factory cotton cover. The snap functions quite fine. Ok, so if you can forgive the repair you have yourself a decent mottoed HJ. Exc+

HJ-214 Early Puma HJ Knife
Blade shows some age and scuffs as well as some sharpening to the cutting edge. It has been cleaned along the way and there are light scratches from this. The motto is fairly clear. The maker mark is stamped nice and deep. This example has no riccaso or RZM designation as I would expect on an early piece. Most of the original buffer is intact. Blade is Exc. Fittings are plated steel with 95% of the original plating intact. Grip plates are secured with nickel rivets. The wiggly diamond is perfect. Brown LFS marked scabbard leather has suffered a repair near the throat where it looks to have been cut part way through and glued back in place. It will be fine so long as you don'y yank on it. The body shows minor wear with an good painted finish and 95% of the original paint intact. It is dent free. Runner retains factory cotton cover. The snap functions quite fine. Ok, so if you can forgive the repair you have yourself a decent mottoed HJ. Exc+

HJ-217 Transitional Anton Wingen HJ Knife
Here's a nice example with a clear motto. Blade shows some minor age grey but no sharpening. The motto is light but all there. Original buffer is intact. Blade is Exc+. Fittings are plated steel with 95%+ of the original plating intact showing wear exactly were we like to see it, right where the retaining strap rubs in normal wear. Grip plates are secured with nickel rivets. The diamond is perfect. Black scabbard leather is in weak shape with age but it's all there. The desirable anodized finish shows wear yet remains dent free. The snap functions quite fine. A good mottoed example! Exc+

HJ-213 Transitional Franz Pils & Sohn HJ Knife
Here's a nice Vet purchased example with a very deep and clear motto. Blade shows some minor age grey and scuffs on the cutting edge as well there are some marks from the runners. The motto is very deep. Rather than field a bunch of emails I'll address this now. These guys are an extremely rare maker. Rumor has it they made an SA but like so many SA makers one has not surfaced. This is the second HJ I've seen by them. Both were 1938 variant with the same deep motto. Pils, like we see with some other Steinbach makers did not comform to the same manufacturing practices as the Solingen makers. This motto has been stamped and burnished. The maker mark is stamped nice and deep too. Original buffer is intact. Blade is Exc++. Fittings are plated steel with 99%+ of the original plating intact. Grip plates are secured with aluminum rivets. The wiggly diamond is perfect. Black scabbard leather is in weak shape with age cracks but it's all there. The body shows wear with some of the painted finish remaining, say 50%. It is dent free. The snap functions quite fine. A desirable HJ with a beauty motto! Exc++

HJ-212 Transitional Wingen Hitler Youth Knife
Purchased from a US Vet family This is exactly how it was received. The blade is clean with the exception of some scuffs near the edge, perhaps from light attempts to sharpen. I say that but look at the crossgraining!! you rarely get a nice blade like this on and HJ!!  Rates Exc++ The reverse riccasso is stamped RZM 7/51/39, 39 being the year of manufacture. To the reverse riccaso is a smal knight, the logo of Anton Wingen. Oiginal leather buffer is intact. Fittings retain 99% of original nickel plating to the steel hilt. Grip plates are perfect and the diamond rocks ever so slightly.  The grips are mounted with aluminum rivets. HJ-216 RZM 7/80/40 Gustav C. Spitzer Hitler Youth Knife
The blade was covered with crap and I had to clean it off to show you what you are getting. I did not try to improve the gray but you likely could if you spend some time on this. There's age and some scratches and sharpening. Rates Exc The reverse is stamped RZM 7/80/40. The 40 indicating year of manufacture. Leather buffer is intact. Fittings retain 90%+ of original nickel plating to the zinc hilt. Grip plates are in good shape being chip and crack free. The diamond is perfect with a wee wiggle. The grips are mounted with nickel rivets. Scabbard retains 96% of what looks like a period repainted finish. Black leather shows minor wear. Aan original at a reasonable price. Exc/Exc+

HJ-215 RZM 7/13 Arthur Schüttelhofer & Co. Hitler Youth Knife
Purchased from an Il. Vet family this week. The blade is actually pretty good. There's a witness mark to the mid obverse from where the runner has rested for the past 70 years. There's some minor age and light gray the odd scratch but no sharpening. Exc+ The reverse is stamped RZM 7/13 for Schüttlehofer one of the most prolific of all the RZM makers. Leather buffer is intact. Fittings retain 90%+ of original nickel plating to the desirable steel hilt. Grip plates are in good shape being chip and crack free. The diamond is perfect and yes, it rocks, not neccessary but I know some guys like to see this. The grips are mounted with nickel rivets. Scabbard retains 50% of original paint with wear and crazing. To the reverse the kid has scratched in his initials, "W.P." a charming touch. Black leather shows wear and the snap is marked "splendid". Interesting touch, dispite the RZM organization attempting to make these things as generic as possible manufacturers, at every turn tried to get their name out there! Exc/Exc+
